Women live longer than men.  The average American woman will live to age 81, while the average American man will live to age 76.  This extra time that women experience also tends to be spent healthier.  (National Center for Health Statistics, 2018)

Women are likely to spend some of their retirement years alone.  Due to widowhood, divorce, or being single their whole lives, a high percentage of older women are more likely to be alone.  (Society of Actuaries, the Pew Foundation, 2016)
